Story Board of Gucci

  The Story of Gucci

Welcome back beautifuls, in my previous blog we were discussing the movie "House of Gucci" well in today’s blog we are going to go more in depth and do a story boarding of some great scenes in this movie. But before we get to it lets talk about story boarding a little bit:

So what is story borading? Well story borading is used as a planning tool for movie makers that involves a sequence of sketches to outline scenes in storytelling. Know you may be wondering, what is the point of doing this? By doing story boarding it helps creators map out key moments, camera angles, and lighting, etc. before the production of the movie, this makes shure the story goes clearly and effectively. Know that we cleared things up let's jump right into it!

Let’s start with the first scene where Patrizia and Maurizio get married! This scene is full of joyfulness which shows the blooming love of the couple in the beginning in the movie.

To start with I roughly illustrated the entire scene. Then I drew pink lines to show the movement of the camera, I also wrote some vague ideas of what can be seen in the scene. As you guys can see here:

I further highlighted key points on the side that adds further understanding to the scene. Some main points to focus on include how there’s strong lighting used where Maurizio is
standing whereas everywhere else on the scene uses more shadows and darker lighting, this indicates the 'destiny' of the two characters to each other and conveys to the audience that their love is stronger, It also indicates how Maurizio made the right decision to marry Patrizia, even though later in the movie this may change. Moreover, the scene uses a dolly shot from Patrizias point of view, by being in Patrizias shoes as she is walking to the altar towards Maurizio the audience can feel the connection the couple. The scene also has a cheerful mood as the music playing is playful.

Story boarding this scene was difficult at first, trying to get the right perspective, so it took a few revisions to get the desired results. Then after writing some key factors of the scene it ended up being a good representation of the actual scene. But I'll let you guys be the judge of that, you guys can view the actual movie scene below:

Now for the second scene I choose a scene where it shows the setting for the audience. Patrizia and Maurizio was invited for their uncles birthday party and this is a good opportunity to show off the wealthiness of the Gucci family as the scene shows the entire estate to the watcher.

To illustrate this scene íi made two drawings and put them together to illustrate the moving transition that ends up placing the beginning of the scene to a different perspective of the same setting. Similarly like in the previous drawing with pink lines I showed the movement of the camera and then labeled main points on the drawing. This is how it turned out:

This scene mostly used as an illustration as I mentioned before to really show that luxury and high-class the Gucci estate has. Natural daylight is used in this scene which makes it more natural gives a good mood towards the place, this contrasts the other villas that are shown in the movie which are portrayed as more dark and has a serious atmosphere. Moreover, there’s playful classical music playing during the scene which makes it seem even more peaceful and happy to the viewer.

To make this story board it was not too hard too hard to draw it, while I did take my time to figure out how to show the movement of the scene, overall drawing the scenery was not too difficult. Below you guys can look at the original scene yourselves:

As for the third scene I choose a scene between patrizia, Maurizio, and Uncle having dinner together while discussing about Maurizio continuing the family legacy of Gucci. After roughly drawing the scene, like in the other drawings with pink lines I showed the movement of camera and labeled key points on the drawing. Then I pointed out some more factors that makes the scene look like as is. You guys can view it here:

This scene has a serious atmosphere as low-key lighting is used, and the only source of light is coming from the small lamps. However, this serous tone is lightened a bit as there is jazz music playing in the background. There is a pan shot as well as a tracking shot is used as the waiter appears on screen and by walking through the restaurant from one side to the next it brings our attention to the three characters talking.

Making this story board was one of the challenging ones to make. The scenery is really dark, so it was difficult illustrating what exactly is going on in the background. Also, the perspective to use was hard as well since the scene is quite long and it goes from one side to another so trying to fit both sides in frame was challenging. But overall, it turned out well, you guys can view the actual scene and tell me what you guys think:

Wow so in this blog we defenitely went through a lot of new things! We went over what story boarding is and how it involves sketches of scenes which to my best of abilities I attempted myself. By trying this out I can see how this can help movie makers plan ahead in their before they get to the actual production of the movie which can make the whole process so much more efficient! However as fun as it is, it defenitely had some challenges, it can be hard capture the main moments you want to illustrate. Personally for example I caught myself spending way too much time on details time to time and overall loosing to hit my main points. Also, when movie makers may have changing ideas all the time so story boarding each idea can be a lot! Overall, even if story boarding has some challenges, it still gives movie makers a lot of advantages!
That is it for todays blog my beautifuls, hope to see you back for the next one! If story boarding peaked your interest, why don't you try it out yourself? Be sure to leave a comment on your thoughts. Bye!
