House of Gucci
Welcome
back my beautifuls to my blog! Today's topic is going to be about
mise-en-scene, a French term that means "to put on scene". I just
recently had the chance to see the movie "House of Gucci" I have to
say it was amazing! So I was thinking wouldn't it be fun to analyze this movie
based on Mise-en-Scene.
Before we
get into it lets talk a little bit about the movie itself, the film is about the famous Gucci family and their story, directed by Ridley Scott. One of my favorite singer and actor stars in the movie,
Lady Gaga, along with other stars like Adam Driver, Jared Leto, and La Pacion. This movie uses grate mise-en-scene that we will analyze together so let's jump right into it!
Before we look into some individual scenes lets talk about the overall mise-en-scene used in the movie. First if all the actors casted was a great aspect of this movie.
The actors not only looked more like that stereotypical European look but they also resembled the real life people they played. Every actor in my opinion executed their role very nicely, each of them added to the personality to their characters, making the movie even more enjoyable. Alos the props are something to mention as well. The designer clothes and handbags along with the setting of mansions visually really added to that luxurious lifestyle that the Gucci family was living in. Furthermore, I like the way they used lighting and the color palette throughout the movie, as the more the movie progressed and the more unfortunate events unfolded the darker the lighting and colors got in the movie which creates such a great contrast between how the family started and how it ended.

In our first scene we can see the first interaction between the main couple. Here the first main thing to note is the lighting and composition. The two characters are standing in the middle with a stronger light on them, making them stand out more than the other people. This can convey the liking they are taking to each other as the way they stand out can suggests that they enjoy each others company so everything looses focus around them. That is why a strong light is used to enlighten the couple. Also it can be viewed that Patricia seems more confident almost like taking the first initiative, this may suggest her dominance that will later on will be an important aspect of her character as she gets more manipulative later in the movie. When we think about the setting this is the first time we get an inside to the luxury or the Gucci family. Another thing to note are the costumes, Patricias red dress can suggest love and affection, however it may also foreshadow her cruelness that will get stronger as her greediness grows.

In our next scene we can view the couple getting married. The first thing that comes to mind at weddings is happiness and fun. However this scene feels a bit lacking in this aspect. Even thought the lighting is warm suggesting a comforting scenery, there is low-key lighting used, creating dark shadows making a more tense atmosphere which is unusual for a wedding, this lighting may foreshadow how this marriage will be the downfall of the Gucci family. The dark shadow on Maricio (the groom) also be a hint to his unfortunate ending. When we look at the costumes it is very traditional, the veil and wedding dress as well as the suit all look designer, also the props of the wedding including all the flowers and decor, all of this further gives a visual to the reader to the family's status.

In the next scene we see a fight between the couple which starts to show the crumbling relationship they have. One of the most important things that stand out is the color palette, previously scenes portraying the couple both characters had lighter costumes and their surroundings had warmer more comforting colors, however know we can see very dark furniture which creates a dark atmosphere in the setting, also both of the couples are wearing black, this could symbolize the "death" of their relationship, as black is often a color of grief. The lowkey lighting also adds to the tense atmosphere.

In this scene we can view the Patricia meeting some family members. An important factor that stands out is the composition in which the characters are in. Patricia is clearly facing a member of the Gucci family in a very welcoming way, her body language suggesting she is interested to be there, also the family member seems to be interested towards her as well as he talks pretty direct towards her direction. On the other hand the son of the family member, the cousin, is facing away from the characters, which gives an insight on their relationship as it is revealed that the cousin and his father have a very bad relationship. Furthermore the setting is very dark and old-schooled, the use of darker furniture creates a tense mood, it suggest that the Gucci family may not be all that it seems. There is also lowkey-lighting used which further adds to this tense atmosphere creating a tension between the characters as well.

In this scene we can see Patricia talking to Maricio's friend who seems to be a threat to her as she suspects that Maricio is cheating on her with this other woman. The first thing that stands out to me is the costume. Patricia is wearing red clothing which suggests aggressive and cruelty showing that she has lost her innocence and her greed is only growing and she does not actually love Maricio rather his money and status. On the other hand the other woman is wearing white clothing which symbolizes purity. It shows how she may love Maricio for who he is rather than his money, also she is not the only person that wears white in this scene but Mauricio as well, which foreshadows their affair. The composition is interesting in this scene as well, while Patricia is fully turned towards the woman, the woman on the other hand is more turned away, this shows Patricias dominance and how she is threatening the woman to stay away.
Well that is it for today my beautifuls! I hope I managed to peak your interest in not only watching this movie but analyzing it as well. Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments! Bye!
